Want Something To Do for Your Kids?

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

I had a humbling opportunity to volunteer at Kingdom Revival Church in Ocala, Florida, to help with their Food Give Away Ministry. This ministry is provided every Wednesday, at 8:30 A.M. Its purpose is to provide free food to individuals and families in the community in need. On the day I volunteered, they gave away items such as breakfast beverages, loaves of bread, veggies, and even baby food. Dozens of cars lined the parking lot, waiting for their turn to move through the distribution line.

I loved that the volunteers had a great “roll-up-your-sleeves” attitude. They showed that there wasn’t any task too big or too small to help those who came for free food. They didn’t judge or belittle. It was laborious work; lots of lifting, bending, and walking. Their coordinator, Ms. Rose, ran the whole operation like a well-oiled engine, as cars continuously streamed in for well over an hour. I was happy to help, but sad to see so many people in need.

In a world where there are so many societal issues, including food insecurities and homelessness, we all need to get more involved. One way is to become a volunteer. There are so many places looking for your support. Volunteering is also great for students, especially now that school is out for the summer. The Florida Department of Education expressly encourages community service and service learning for students, because it fosters character development and civic engagement. Just Google “Food Pantries Near Me” and you’ll get a long list of places looking for volunteers.

ACCOLADE Celebrations, Inc., provides coordinated volunteer and service-learning opportunities that serve to help the homeless in Marion County, Florida. We are excited about our newest high school-focused initiative, BAgs To Care for the Homeless (B.A.T.C.H.). Stay tuned in the coming months for more information about this initiative and how you can participate. #helpthehomeless #feedtheneedy #actsofkindness #followus #stayuptodate #celebratingexcellence
