“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The phrase “get ready, get set…go” conjures up images of a foot race, with “get ready” prominently reflected as a critical step in the process. It also invokes visions of a marked starting point and runners racing against time. In the spirit of Martin Luther King’s legacy, however, "get ready, get set, do something” is intended to inspire you to take action to help others, and to ask yourself, “What are you doing for others?”
Need some ideas? Help feed the poor and hungry by giving a gift card from a fast food or grocery store chain to someone in need. Donate clothes, especially socks, to a local shelter. Send a care package filled with snacks and personal care items to deployed troops, veterans, and wounded soldiers. Check out programs at your local library and see if they need assistance. Ladies, give your unused cosmetics, perfume, and toiletries to a shelter for abused women. Volunteer at a local shelter, soup kitchen, community center, at after-school program, or an employment center.
What we shouldn’t do is judge people who are in need. There are so many circumstances that can lead to us falling on hard times, including but not limited to health problems, psychological problems, addiction, abuse, and so much more.
Get Ready… Get Set… Do Something today to make a difference in your community. Even helping one individual can make a small change for the better. Let’s give life to Dr. King’s words and continue to make this world a better place.
